Pavement Paws Privacy Policy

Last updated: September 2026

Pavement Paws is a standalone iOS app that estimates how hot the ground gets today and tells you when to walk your dog. There are no accounts, no analytics, no advertising, and we never sell your data. Almost everything the app does happens on your iPhone. The one thing that leaves it is your approximate location, so a forecast can be fetched for it.

Data Collection

Pavement Paws uses the following to provide its features:

  • Approximate location from your iPhone, with your permission, while you are using the app
  • Your dog’s name, if you choose to enter one, stored locally
  • App preferences (surface, language, appearance, temperature unit, Today card style, heads-up times), stored locally
  • The forecast Pavement Paws last fetched, stored locally for the widget and the heads-ups
  • No personal information about you: no name, email address, or contact details
  • No accounts, no advertising identifiers, no analytics, and no tracking

Data Usage

Your data is used exclusively for:

  • Fetching the local forecast and estimating how hot asphalt, concrete, artificial turf and grass get today
  • Telling you when the ground is fine for a walk, and when it is too hot
  • Showing the name of your town at the top of the screen
  • Putting your dog’s name on the Today screen and in the heads-ups
  • Sending you an optional morning or evening heads-up on days the ground gets too hot
  • Showing home screen and Lock Screen widgets
  • Storing your preferences locally on your device

What Leaves Your Phone

Pavement Paws asks for forecasts through our own proxy, a small service we run on Cloudflare, which forwards the request to the Open-Meteo weather service.

  • The request contains your location rounded to about one kilometre, and nothing that identifies you: no account, no device identifier, no name, no advertising ID
  • Your dog’s name never leaves your phone
  • The proxy exists so the weather service key stays on the server rather than inside the app. It caches answers for a short while, so people close to each other share one lookup
  • Cloudflare runs this service for us and, like any web host, may briefly log technical information such as an IP address for security and reliability
  • We do not build profiles, do not link requests to a person, and do not sell or share this data

Because the request carries an approximate location, we declare it as collected data on the App Store (Coarse Location, not linked to you, used only for the app’s function), even though nothing in it identifies you.

Apple Services

The name of your town is looked up with Apple’s own location service on your iPhone, and that request goes to Apple rather than to us. It is subject to Apple’s privacy policy.

Data Storage

All data Pavement Paws keeps is stored:

  • Locally on your device only
  • Shared with the Pavement Paws widget through a private app group on the same device
  • No cloud storage, no account, no backup server operated by us
  • Deleted when you uninstall the app

Notifications

Pavement Paws may request notification permission to:

  • Send an optional morning heads-up on days your chosen surface gets too hot, at a time you pick between 6:00 and 9:30
  • Send an optional evening heads-up when the ground is still too hot at a time you pick between 15:00 and 18:00, with when it cools down
  • These heads-ups are scheduled on your iPhone by iOS. There is no push server, and no message about you ever leaves your phone
  • Background App Refresh is used, when iOS allows it, to keep the heads-ups based on a recent forecast, using the last location the app saw
  • You can turn heads-ups off in Pavement Paws’ Settings, or disable notifications entirely in device settings

Location Permission

Pavement Paws asks for location “While Using the App”, at about one kilometre of accuracy. It never asks for background location, and it does not track your movements.

  • You can change or revoke this anytime in Settings, Privacy & Security, Location Services
  • Without location, Pavement Paws cannot fetch a local forecast

Your Rights (GDPR)

Under GDPR, you have the right to:

  • Withdraw consent at any time by revoking permissions or uninstalling the app
  • Access your stored data, which lives on your device and in the app
  • Delete all data by uninstalling the app
  • Control location and notification permissions through device settings

Data Deletion

How to delete your data:

  • Data deletion: Uninstall the app
  • Clear your dog’s name in Settings to remove it
  • Control permissions in device Settings

Data Retention

How long your data is kept:

  • Preferences and your dog’s name: Stored locally until you change them or uninstall the app
  • The last forecast: Stored locally and replaced as it refreshes
  • Forecast requests: Cached for a short while at our proxy, then gone. They are never tied to a person
  • No data is retained by us after app deletion

Children’s Privacy

Pavement Paws is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from them. No personal information is collected from any users.

California Privacy Rights (CCPA)

California residents have additional rights:

  • Right to know what personal information is collected
  • Right to opt-out of data sales (we don’t sell data)
  • Right to non-discrimination for exercising rights

Policy Updates

This privacy policy may be updated:

  • We will reflect significant changes by updating the date above
  • Continued app use constitutes acceptance of changes
  • Check this page regularly for updates
