BeachSea Privacy Policy

BeachSea is a standalone iOS app that tells you whether the sea looks safe at your beach right now. There are no accounts, no analytics, no advertising, and we never sell your data. Almost everything the app does happens on your iPhone. The one thing that leaves it is the position of a beach you saved, so a forecast can be fetched for that spot.

Data Collection

BeachSea uses the following to provide its features:

  • Precise location (latitude and longitude) from your iPhone, with your permission, while you are using the app
  • The compass heading from your iPhone, used only by in-the-water mode
  • The beaches you save (name, coordinates, the sea direction you set), stored locally
  • App preferences (language, appearance, readout style, beach scene, morning alerts), stored locally
  • Forecasts BeachSea has fetched, cached locally so the app still works offline
  • No personal information, names, email addresses, or contact details
  • No accounts, no advertising identifiers, no analytics, and no tracking

Data Usage

Your data is used exclusively for:

  • Finding beaches near you when you tap “Beaches near you”
  • Opening the app on the saved beach closest to you
  • Showing wind, waves, water and air temperature, tide trend, and sunset for a saved beach
  • Warning you about offshore wind, rough conditions, and cold water
  • Pointing you back to shore in in-the-water mode, using your position and the phone’s compass
  • Showing a “you are here” dot on the map picture of your beach
  • Naming a beach you place by hand, by looking up what is at that spot
  • Sending you a local morning alert for a beach you switched alerts on for
  • Showing a home-screen widget for your selected beach
  • Storing your preferences locally on your device

What Leaves Your Phone

BeachSea asks for forecasts through our own proxy at beachsea-proxy.getmydailyapps.workers.dev, which is hosted on Cloudflare and forwards the request to the Open-Meteo weather service.

  • The request contains the coordinates of the saved beach being shown, and nothing that identifies you: no account, no device identifier, no name, no advertising ID
  • Your own GPS position is never sent to our server. It is used on your device, for the shore compass, the nearby-beach search, and picking the closest saved beach
  • The proxy exists so the weather service key stays on the server rather than inside the app. It caches answers by coordinate for a few minutes, so several people asking about the same beach share one lookup
  • Cloudflare runs this service for us and, like any web host, may briefly log technical information such as an IP address for security and reliability
  • We do not build profiles, do not link requests to a person, and do not sell or share this data

Because a beach you save sits near where you actually swim, we treat those coordinates as collected data even though nothing identifies you, and we declare them that way on the App Store.

Apple Maps

Some features are drawn by Apple’s own map service, and those requests go to Apple rather than to us:

  • Searching for a beach by name, and the “Beaches near you” list
  • The map you drag to set your sea direction
  • The map picture of your beach shown on the beach screen
  • Working out a name for a pin you placed by hand

These are subject to Apple’s privacy policy. BeachSea sends no personal information with them.

Apple Watch and Apple Health (HealthKit)

The BeachSea watch app runs your in-water session as a workout, which is what keeps the shore arrow live while your wrist is down. With your permission, the session is saved to Apple Health as a workout (a swim, paddle sports, or sailing), including the usual measurements your watch records during a workout, such as heart rate and active energy.

  • Health data stays in Apple Health on your device, under Apple’s protections
  • Health data is never used for advertising or marketing
  • Health data is never sold or shared with third parties, and our servers never see it
  • The watch uses its own GPS and compass only to point the arrow back to shore; that position is processed on the watch and sent nowhere
  • You can revoke access anytime in Settings, Privacy & Security, Health

European Bathing Water Ratings

The official bathing water ratings for European beaches are bundled inside the app. Looking one up makes no network request at all, so nothing about which beach you are checking is revealed to anyone.

Data Storage

All data BeachSea keeps is stored:

  • Locally on your device only
  • Shared with the BeachSea widget through a private app group on the same device
  • No cloud storage, no account, no backup server operated by us
  • Deleted when you uninstall the app

Notifications

BeachSea may request notification permission to:

  • Send an optional morning heads-up, around 8am beach time, when a morning looks rough at a beach you enabled alerts for
  • These alerts are scheduled on your iPhone by iOS. There is no push server, and no message about you ever leaves your phone
  • Background App Refresh is used, when iOS allows it, to keep those alerts based on a recent forecast
  • You can turn alerts off per beach in BeachSea, or disable notifications entirely in device settings

Location Permission

BeachSea asks for location “While Using the App”. It never asks for background location, and it does not track your movements.

  • You can change or revoke this anytime in Settings, Privacy & Security, Location Services
  • Without location, BeachSea still works: you can search for a beach by name and use every safety feature

Your Rights (GDPR)

Under GDPR, you have the right to:

  • Withdraw consent at any time by revoking permissions or uninstalling the app
  • Access your stored data, which lives on your device and in the app
  • Delete all data by uninstalling the app
  • Control location and notification permissions through device settings

Data Deletion

How to delete your data:

  • Data deletion: Uninstall the app
  • Remove a saved beach in the app to delete it and its cached forecast
  • Control permissions in device Settings

Data Retention

How long your data is kept:

  • Saved beaches and preferences: Stored locally until you delete them or uninstall the app
  • Cached forecasts: Stored locally and replaced as they refresh
  • Forecast requests: Cached by coordinate for a few minutes at our proxy, then gone. They are never tied to a person
  • No data is retained by us after app deletion

Children’s Privacy

BeachSea is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from them. No personal information is collected from any users.

California Privacy Rights (CCPA)

California residents have additional rights:

  • Right to know what personal information is collected
  • Right to opt-out of data sales (we don’t sell data)
  • Right to non-discrimination for exercising rights

Policy Updates

This privacy policy may be updated:

  • We will reflect significant changes by updating the date above
  • Continued app use constitutes acceptance of changes
  • Check this page regularly for updates
