Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my altitude (above sea level) drift while I’m standing still?

The altitude-above-sea-level reading comes from your iPhone’s fused altimeter, which combines GPS with the barometer. Indoors or where GPS is weak, it leans on the barometer, so a change in weather (falling or rising air pressure) can look like a slow change in altitude. Step outside with a clear view of the sky and the reading recalibrates to your true elevation. This is expected behavior, not a bug.

Why does LiveHeight ask for location?

Location lets the app show your altitude above sea level, since the barometer alone can only show relative changes. Location is also used by the optional background features: Storm watch (pressure sampling for storm prediction) and Auto-detect hikes.

What is Storm watch, and why does it want background location?

Storm watch samples atmospheric pressure over time to warn you of approaching storms. To keep sampling while the app is closed, it needs “Always” location. Storm watch is optional and off by default. You can use LiveHeight as a live altimeter without ever enabling it. With only “While Using” permission, the app still works; it just won’t monitor in the background.

How does Auto-detect hikes work?

When enabled (it is off by default), LiveHeight starts recording a hike for you once your iPhone detects sustained walking combined with real elevation change, so car or train rides never trigger it. If this happens while the app is closed, you get a notification where you can keep the recording or discard it. The feature needs “Always” location to work while the app is closed, and the motion detection happens entirely on your device.

Does LiveHeight save my hikes to Apple Health?

Yes, optionally. With your permission, a completed hike can be saved to Apple Health as a workout so it counts toward your activity rings. You can turn this off, and your Health data is never sold, shared, or used for advertising.

Will Storm watch drain my battery?

Background pressure sampling is lightweight. It does not keep the screen on or run heavy processing. In testing, an overnight background session used only a small share of battery. You can always turn Storm watch off to disable background monitoring entirely.

Why are the topographic maps slow sometimes?

The topo maps use OpenTopoMap’s free, volunteer-run tile servers, which can be slow at times. Map data is © OpenStreetMap contributors (CC-BY-SA).
